Motorists are attempting to get lower insurance premiums.
Figures from Saga found that more than a quarter of UK motorists have taken steps to reduce their monthly motor insurance spend, while still remaining within the law.
Around a tenth have hiked their voluntary excess, which has the knock-on effect of bringing down monthly premiums.
Roughly the same number - 2.7 million drivers - have traded in their car for one with a smaller engine, which has the added bonus of lowering petrol and tax costs, as well as insurance.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, said that a lot more people could be spending less on their monthly premiums by taking some of these steps.
"Remembering to update your car insurance policy as your needs change can help save money on monthly premiums at a time when many people are looking to reign in their spending," he said.
"However it's important to ensure the quality of the cover isn't compromised and the policy still meets all your needs."
